How to protect PUR foam from external factors?
Sometimes polyurethane foam insulation needs a little support to provide complete and safe protection to the house. One of the substances that protect the foam surface is polyurea. What is polyurea and what are its properties?

What is polyurea?

If you make a decision to invest in polyurethane foam insulation, you have probably heard about polyurea. What is it? It is a spray coating, formed from a two-component resin system. It is used to protect a variety of surfaces from adverse external influences.

Polyurea is the result of a reaction between isocyanate and polyamines. When sprayed, the prepolymer combines with the polyamines, starting to gel. The entire process takes just a few seconds and the finished product provides a smooth surface.

Polyurea is a liquid and can be applied to a wide variety of surfaces. It dries quickly and after about 24 hours the surface covered with it is ready for use. It is perfect for irregular surfaces. After the process is completed the product is 100% safe for health and does not emit toxic substances.

What is the purpose of PUR foam protection with polyurea?

Polyurea is often used as an anti-corrosion and waterproofing coating. It is perfect for securing closed-cell polyurethane foam, concrete, wooden or metal surfaces. It is extremely durable and resistant to mechanical damage. Polyurea is used in many sectors. It is employed in construction, gardening, chemical and automotive industries.

Experts in PUR foam insulation are well aware of its excellent properties, and know that the foam must be protected against external factors. One of them is UV rays, which can damage the thermal insulation material. Spraying polyurethane foam with polyurea highly protects the thermal insulation layer against UV rays as well as unfavourable weather conditions. It forms a 100% waterproofing layer.

Polyurea is water resistant, therefore it is used to protect PUR closed-cell foam, e.g. Purios HR , against moisture. Both products in combination with each other create excellent thermal and water insulation, which protects e.g. roof, house foundations or elements which are in frequent contact with water. Coating PUR foam with polyurea provides additional protection for surfaces particularly exposed to ground water.

What are polyurea PUR foam coatings used for?

Polyurea coatings are used as a protective layer for various types of surfaces, e.g. on building foundations, to protect the insulation against mechanical damage during backfilling with soil. They provide increased waterproofing and protect against chemical damage.

Polyurethanes are most commonly used to protect concrete and steel structures from moisture, corrosion and unwanted chemical attack. They provide effective protection for pipes and ducts. They are also used to protect concrete roofs. They are also used in the automotive industry to protect the cargo area of pickup trucks. If you are planning to insulate a roof with foam , it is also necessary to protect the foam surface against the harmful effects of UV radiation and moisture.

Therefore, it is worth using PUR foam protection with polyurea wherever objects are exposed to particularly harsh operating conditions.
