PUR foam insulation of the roof

The roof is one of the most important building partitions in the entire house, as it protects against the weather, physical elements and stabilises the structure. Therefore, it should be sufficiently protected. Insulating the roof with the Purios closed-cell or open-cell foam guarantees effective protection against temperature fluctuations. It is the ideal solution when insulating a flat roof.

  • Very high durability
  • Protection against heat loss
  • Persistence of parameters

Are you insulating the roof? Choose the Purios insulation system

What is the Purios insulation system?

It is a solution based on two liquid components. The right composition of the mixture, the pressure and the right temperature make it possible to obtain polyurethane foam of reproducible quality. For roof insulation, the rigid closed-cell foam is used.

Does the PUR foam work well for roof insulation?

The insulation of the roof has to meet high requirements. Thanks to its high strength, the closed-cell foam withstands impacts and pressure well enough, but also the work of the roof. It also needs to be airtight and uniform to form a barrier to cold and moisture. UV-protected, it will provide efficient thermal insulation for many years. It is a recommended material for flat roofs.

Why the foam insulation on the roof?

The Purios spray foam insulation system is one of the few solutions that will work out well as an externally applied material. Its properties lend it a very good thermal conductivity parameter. Polyurethane is resistant to the negative effects of moisture, for example degradation, settlement or mould growth. The PUR foam maintains its characteristics for at least 25 years.

Advantages of the Purios pur foam roof insulation

  • It is a spray-applied material with particularly good heat retention properties.
  • The polyurethane foam is characterised by its mechanical strength.
  • The closed-cell system displays very high water resistance.
  • The PUR foam creates an environment unfavourable to the growth of micro-organisms, including mould.
  • Durable thermal insulation with the Purios system is used on residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural roofs.
  • The spraying of the polyurethane foam is the fastest way to insulate a roof – up to 200 m2 in 1 day.
  • The durability and quality of the Purios insulation systems is also assured by the certificate confirming the stability of their parameters for 25 years.
  • The spray material allows both the thermal insulation and the thermal retrofitting of the roof.
  • The foaming effect causes the foam to fill the spaces and slots that would prove problematic with traditional solutions, as thermal bridges would appear.

How do we ensure the quality of your home’s roof insulation?

Purios

Purios

The PUR insulation systems are characterised by one of the lowest thermal conductivity coefficients (λ), which means that even a thin foam layer reduces heat loss effectively. This ensures that the building maintains a stable temperature in both winter and summer, which in turn helps reduce energy consumption for heating and air conditioning, thereby reducing energy bills.

Purios

The PUR foam expands once applied, filling even the smallest gaps and cracks thoroughly. This eliminates thermal bridges, in other words places where heat could escape and cold air could enter the building. The full tightness causes the interior to be better protected from draughts and cold, increasing the residents’ comfort.

Purios

Compared to traditional insulation materials, the polyurethane foam is significantly lighter. This is crucial for roof structures, as it does not put additional strain on the roof trusses, which can be important with older or more fragile roof structures.

Purios

The PUR insulation systems are extremely durable, retaining their insulating properties for many years. The polyurethane foam does not settle or lose its thermal insulation properties with time, which means long-term benefits to investing in the PUR insulation. Unlike some other materials, it requires no maintenance or replacement, minimising running costs.

What is worth knowing when insulating a roof with the Purios foam?

Insulating the roof involves applying the insulation material to the external part. The particularly demanding conditions at the highest building partition of the house mean that only material with unique properties should be used. The Purios closed-cell foam works best.

What are the most important features of this material?

  • Very high mechanical strength.
  • High resistance to moisture.
  • Excellent thermal insulation properties.

A material with these characteristics is ideal for insulating a flat roof. The crushing strength means that the rigid polyurethane foam often forms the outer, un-built layer of the roof. In the case of the thermal insulation of a pitched roof with timber trusses, the open-cell foam proves a better solution.

Frequently asked questions

Each manufacturer offers foam with different properties. Our priority is the safety of our clients; therefore, our Purios thermal insulation systems receive the classification “self-extinguishing” in fire reaction tests. It should be added that the polyurethane foam has the unique property of covering itself with a thin layer of scale when exposed to fire. It blocks the spread of flames and therefore clearly limits the effects of a fire.

The high density of the polyurethane foam (>50 kg/m3), the type of plastic and the additives used in it make it into a very strong material. This is very important and beneficial for flat roofs insulated from the outside. Compressive strength at 10% deformation >350 kPa, so you can freely walk on such a surface and also develop it in any way you like, for example as a recreational or green area.

The “oxidation” of building materials is a very serious issue for contractors and investors alike. That being said, this does not apply to the Purios foam available in our offer. Thanks to regular tests in ageing chambers and from observation, we do know that even after 25 years the spray insulation retains its key properties, including its volume and shape. While the foam is highly resistant to chemical agents, it degrades when exposed to UV rays; therefore, it should be protected with a water-based, single-component polyurethane membrane. This protection forms a homogeneous and tight layer, resistant to water and sunlight.

The closed-cell Purios insulation system exhibits very good properties in preventing water penetration; however, it is not a waterproofing material. Therefore, it requires protection against moisture.

Not having to build over the closed-cell PUR foam proves a huge advantage that yields clear benefits. The Purios thermal insulation forms a uniform and even surface on the roof, which must be protected from water and sunlight. This will create an even and durable layer protecting the structure against many physical factors.
